Jemimah Rodrigues: The Talented Women Cricketer From India
Jemimah Rodrigues: Indian Cricketer
If you are good enough, you are young enough. This mantra has been particularly applicable in the case of Jemimah Rodrigues, a very young Indian women’s cricketer. Born in 2000, Rodrigues made her international debut at the impressive age of 17. A talented top-order batsman, Jemimah Rodrigues will enjoy a long career with India’s women’s team. Sky Sports produced a documentary in 2018, narrated by Nasser Hussain, about cricket in Mumbai and it featured a short segment on Jemimah Rodrigues.
Jemimah Rodrigues: T20 Cricket
Jemimah made her India debut early in 2018, after being selected to tour South Africa. She was handed her maiden cap in the First T20I against South Africa’s women’s team. Jemimah Rodrigues was batting at four and hit 37 (27) to set up India’s seven-wicket win. This was a great to start to her international career and she hit 44 (34) in the last match of the series. The following month, in March of 2018, Australia’s and England’s women’s teams toured India. Jemimah Rodrigues was promoted to open the batting and she hit her first fifty in the fourth match of the series, against Australia. Her 50 came in 41 balls and contained eight fours.
Praise from Meg Lanning
After seeing Jemimah Rodrigues bat, Australian legend Meg Lanning was full of praise for the teenager. Meg Lanning was quoted, on Wisden’s website, as saying:
“She’s an exciting talent, she comes out and plays without fear, and we know when we’re bowling to her, we know we have to get it right or we’ll be going the journey. India has a few of those (fearless) players coming through, which is really good. That’s just sort of the new nature of the women’s game. Those sorts of players are going to thrive in the next few years.”
Jemimah Rodrigues: ODI Cricket
Rodrigues is a very flexible batsman and can bat where her team needs her to. She batted at three on her ODI debut against Australia and managed just 1. The following match she was promoted to open the batting and scored 42 (41). Jemimah was opening alongside Smriti Mandhana and they shared in an opening partnership of over 100. Since Rodrigues is just beginning her career, she has not had many opportunities to play ODI cricket so far.
Jemimah Rodrigues: The Trailblazer
History was made during the 2018 IPL, as the BCCI organised an all-stars women T20 match before the knock-out stages. So, 22 of the best female cricketers from around the world flocked to Mumbai to play in this historic match. Jemimah Rodrigues was one of the cricketers involved, playing for the Trailblazers against the Supernovas. The Trailblazers were batting first and Rodrigues scored a quick 25 and was the second highest run-scorer for her team. While the Trailblazers lost in the end, the game was a great advert for women’s cricket and has sparked talks of a women’s IPL.
