Jagatheesan Kousik: Indian Cricketer
Fast-bowling all-rounders are a valuable commodity in India. Not many quality fast-bowling all-rounders have broken into the India side recently, with Hardik Pandya and previously Stuart Binny being exceptions. Kapil Dev’s legacy has been left unfulfilled as of yet, but there is an exciting new generation of fast-bowling all-rounders emerging in India. Jagatheesan Kousik is part of this movement. Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Jagatheesan Kousik made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2015 and has gone on to become a key player for his state.
Jagatheesan Kousik’s debut
Jagatheesan Kousik made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2015, playing for Tamil Nadu against Baroda. Kousik batted at seven and opened the bowling. He did not have a particularly memorable debut, scoring a handful of runs and not taking any wickets. In the first innings, Kousik scored just 1 and was dismissed by Yusuf Pathan who went on to take four wickets. He had a longer stay in the second innings, scoring 14 (61). In terms of his bowling, he was exceptionally economical when he bowled. Figures of 5-3-2-0 showed his discipline in the first innings. However, he was not required to bowl in the fourth innings due to the nature of the pitch. Tamil Nadu ultimately won this match by seven runs and it was a low scoring thriller.
When will Jagatheesan Kousik be a regular starter for Tamil Nadu in red ball cricket?
Despite already having a Ranji Trophy hundred to his name, Kousik has not been a regular starter for Tamil Nadu in red ball cricket. He has played 12 First-Class matches in three full seasons, showing how he has been omitted from the team on numerous occasions. His statistics, after his first three seasons, were exceptional, having a bowling average of just over 20. As Jagatheesan Kousik plays more and more cricket, becoming more experienced, he will be featured more regularly for Tamil Nadu. He is a very bright talent and his state should look after him and nurture his natural ability.
Jagatheesan Kousik: The T20 player
Kousik spent the off-season playing for Siechem Madurai Panthers in the 2018 Tamil Nadu Premier League. Jagatheesan Kousik had reasonable success in that tournament, starring more as a bowler than a batsman. That said, Kousik did play some great innings, batting at four for the Siechem Madurai Panthers. In particular, his 38* (22) against the Jones TUTI Patriots stood out. Coming in at four, Kousik steered his side to a seven wicket win and took them all the way over the line. In terms of his bowling, Kousik was economical throughout and regularly picked up wickets.
